Ecommerce SEO Starts with Content and Measurement

· Portican team

Set up ecommerce SEO with clear content, separate markets and a regular check of your organic search data.

SEO for an online store starts with a clear title, description and page content that match what customers are searching for. Then you use analytics to check whether organic search brings clicks, which queries appear and where revenue comes from.

What should you set up in the store first?

Start with the information that both customers and search engines see directly in the store. In the Portican administration, open Store → Name and contact and check:

  • the store name,
  • one sentence about the store,
  • the description for search engines,
  • the contact details.

The name can appear in the header, on the browser tab, in search results and in the footer. The sentence about the store appears in the footer and under the main heading of the home page, if that section has no subheading of its own. Google may show the description for search engines under the store name.

Write the texts so that they immediately explain what you sell and for whom. Do not just repeat general advertising claims. In the description, include the product category or service people are looking for and the reason why they should open this particular page.

When editing the Slovak and Czech markets, check which store you have open in the administration. Content and measurement are set per market; switching the market in the header changes the data you are editing.

How do you organize product and category content?

Go through the main categories and products in the order in which a customer finds them in the menu. For each page, check:

  • whether the title names the range precisely,
  • whether the introductory text explains the difference from similar categories,
  • whether the product name contains a specific type, use or feature,
  • whether the description answers the questions people have before buying,
  • whether the page contains no empty or repeated texts.

First fix the pages that the main navigation leads to. Then move on to the products and categories that already have impressions or clicks from organic search. If a page gets impressions but few clicks, edit its title and description so that they match the query more precisely.

Do not edit content based on traffic alone. A page may bring in people who are not looking for what you sell. So for every edit, compare the query with the page content and check whether the visitor finds the answer without searching further.

Where do you evaluate organic search?

You can find organic clicks, impressions, average position and queries in Google Search Console. In Portican they are also shown under Advertising → Advertising analytics in the Organic search section, if Advertising is turned on for the market, campaign data has been downloaded for the period, Google is connected and a property is selected. A store without campaigns uses Search Console directly.

For organic search, go through these parts: organic clicks, impressions, average position and queries. For average position, a lower value means a better placement.

Proceed like this:

  1. Open the period you want to evaluate.
  2. Check whether organic clicks are shown. If not, check the Search Console connection and the selected property.
  3. Pick queries with a large number of impressions and verify that their landing page contains the exact answer.
  4. For queries with a worse position, edit the title, introductory text or description of the page.
  5. After the edit, write down the date of the change and at the next evaluation compare the period before it and after it.

How do you separate the Slovak and Czech markets?

Set up the Slovak and Czech campaigns as separate measurement. In practice there are two accounts with two pixels; in Portican the market is switched in the header and its settings are under Marketing → Measurement and advertising.

When checking, do the following:

  • open the Slovak market and write down its advertising accounts and measurement property,
  • verify that the Czech market uses its own accounts and its own pixel,
  • check that you are not sending data from one market to the account of the other market,
  • when evaluating, compare the same market, not the whole store at once.

Each store should measure to its own accounts. Analytics and advertising events should not be sent without the visitor's consent. So also check the status of server-side sending in the settings.

How do you find out whether organic search brings revenue?

In advertising analytics, open the Where revenue comes from card. First look at the share of paid and unpaid channels in GA4. Then open the Organic search section, which has a summary of clicks, impressions and average position for the whole website and the strongest queries.

Read the result together with revenue, not in isolation. If organic clicks grow after a content edit but revenue does not, check the price, availability, the trustworthiness of the page and the path to purchase. If both organic clicks and revenue drop, compare the date of the drop with the last change to content or technical setup.

Advertising analytics compares campaign numbers with the previous period of the same length. This helps you tell a change in the campaign from a normal fluctuation. When deciding on the budget, use organic data as well, because revenue does not have to come only from paid advertising.

The numbers from the advertising platform and GA4 can differ. Advertising platforms may count conversions after a view and within a longer window, while GA4 typically uses the last indirect click. So write the difference down and look at its direction and size; do not automatically treat the higher number from the advertising platform as additional revenue.

What should you check in measurement?

For a purchase, verify that measurement is set up for the right market and advertising account. With Google Ads, the conversion ID alone is not enough: a purchase also needs the label of the conversion action.

If you use Google Tag Manager, direct Google Ads tags are not loaded in the browser. The GA4 identifier, however, is still needed for server-side measurement of purchases and refunds. In the Check section you will see only what was sent from the server; events sent by the customer's browser are verified in the tools of the relevant network.

If you tested Meta events, delete the test events code after the test. As long as it stays filled in, server events go to the tests and are not counted in campaigns.

When is the data incomplete?

Google Analytics and Search Console are live loads. One may fail while the other and the campaign numbers remain available. If there is an error, check the status of the specific block, not just the whole page.

Organic data in advertising analytics applies to the whole website. On their own they do not say which specific change brought an order. Ecomail also counts campaign orders by the contact's email, not by the visit, so its numbers can differ from GA4.

The numbers on one screen therefore do not show the whole customer journey. Use them to steer a decision, and verify specific changes in the tools of the relevant network and in the orders.

What should you take away from this?

Start ecommerce SEO with content that names the range precisely and answers customers' queries. Then check organic clicks, impressions, average position and queries in the right Slovak or Czech market.

When judging the result, combine organic data with revenue and paid channels. Record the difference between the advertising platform and GA4 instead of automatically changing the budget based on a single number. You can find everything that can be set up in the store in the features of Portican.

Frequently asked questions

What does SEO for an online store mean?

It is the editing of titles, descriptions and page content so that they match customers' queries, together with measuring organic clicks and results.

Where do I find organic clicks and queries?

In Google Search Console. In Portican also under Advertising → Advertising analytics in the Organic search section, if Advertising is turned on for the market, campaign data has been downloaded and Google Search Console is connected.

Should I measure the Slovak and Czech markets together?

No. The Slovak and Czech campaigns usually mean two accounts with two pixels, so check each market separately.

Why do GA4 and the advertising platform not match?

They use different attribution rules. The advertising platform may count a view and a longer conversion window, while GA4 typically credits the last indirect click.

What should I do when organic data is missing?

Check the Google connection, the selected property and the status of the specific block. In Advertising analytics the organic block appears only with Advertising turned on and campaign data available. A Search Console error does not have to mean an outage of campaign data.

When is an analytics event sent?

Analytics is sent only for a visitor who allowed analytics cookies; advertising events require consent to marketing cookies.
